Kurma Purana




Kurmapurana holds special importance in the fifteenth place in the list of Mahapuranas. The knowledge of Kurma Purana was first narrated to King Indradyumna by Lord Vishnu in the form of Kurma. Again the knowledge of this story was narrated by Lord Vishnu to the deities Indradi and Naradji etc. sages at the time of the churning of the ocean. For the third time, the knowledge of the holy Kurma Purana was narrated to eighty-eight thousand sages on the occasion of Naimisharanya’s twelve-year Mahasatra by sage Romaharshan. This name of Kurma Purana has been narrated by Kurma, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, hence Kurma Purana has become famous.
The five main characteristics of Puranas, Sarg, Pratisarg, Vansh, Manvantar, and Vanshnucharit have been described in detail. The uniformity of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu has been said in Kurma Purana. Eight thousand names of Parvati, the greatness of Kashi and Prayag region, description of Ishwar Gita, Vyas Gita, etc. have been described in this Purana.
Introduction:-
The Kurma Purana is divided into two parts, the eastern part and the northern part. In this Purana, 17,000 verses, four Samhitas, and five main characteristics of Puranas, Sarg, Pratisarg, Vansh, Manvantar, and Vanshanuchrit have been discussed systematically. In Kurma Purana, the description of spirituality, Kalikarma, and virtue is also found.
In the Kurma Purana, the description of the origin of Mahalakshmi in the context of the churning of the ocean after Lord Vishnu assumed the Kurma avatar, and the description of Mahatmya, Mahalakshmi and King Indradyumna, praise of Vishnu by King Indradyumna, and Shivatattva in the form of Parabrahma Well known.
Apart from this, a description of Lord Shiva’s penance by Lord Shri Krishna in Kurma Purana, a description of Shiva’s incarnations, a description of Linga Mahatma, a description of Charo Yuga and Yuga Dharma, Mahatma of pilgrimages and 28 Vyas have been mentioned.
Brief story of Kurma Purana: –
Both the deities and the demons got ready to churn the ocean to get the nectar, so first of all the medicines of the earth were immersed in the ocean. For churning, he started churning the ocean by making Mandaranchal mountain as a churn and Vasuki snake as a rope. But Mandarachal mountain started drowning in the ocean and went into the underworld of the bottomless ocean.
Then the deities and the demons pleaded with Lord Vishnu and Lord Vishnu assumed the form of Kurma ie: Tortoise and lifted the Mandarachal mountain on his back and took the mountain as a churner. Thus the ocean was churned by the gods and demons.
As a result of the churning of the ocean, the Parijat tree, Hari sandalwood, Kalpa tree, Kaustubh gem, Dhanvantari Vaidya, Chandrama, Kamdhenu, Airavat elephant, Uchchai: Shrava horse, Sharanga bow, Lakshmi, Rambha, Conch, Varuni, Kalakoot, Amashta Kalash these fourteen gems came out.
Importance of Kurma Purana:-
The best essence of the four Vedas is established in the Kurma Purana. Kurma Purana is Vaishnava Pradhan Purana, yet Shaivism has been described in detail in this Purana. That’s why this Purana remains very important for all sects. In this Purana, a detailed description of these five characteristics of Sarg, Pratisarg, Vansh, Manvantar, and Vanshnucharit is found.
In the Kurma Purana, it has been called the Kirtan of Parabrahma in its true form and the ultimate pilgrimage among pilgrimages, the ultimate austerity among penances, the ultimate knowledge among knowledge, and the ultimate vow among vows. The story of Kurma Purana destroys sins. Lord Vishnu himself has spoken the statement of Kurma Purana. That’s why by listening to this Purana, a man enjoys all the pleasures in this world, gets rid of all the sins, and finally attains the Brahma world.
