Understanding States of Consciousness:

** State of consciousness is explained in Mandukya upanishad as Jagrath (waking), Svapna (Dream state), Sushupti (deep-sleep) and Turya (fourth state of self realisation)

In the Waking state, we are aware of ourselves and our association with world outside as perceived by the "Gross body"

Dream state is perceived by the subtle body which is known as thaijasa (bright and burning). Our focus is on the mind which has 'inward' experiences during dream.

Third state is the deep sleep state, where subtle and gross body are at rest. Causal body which is wisdom or gyaan based, is awake and its related consciousnessis veiled due to our ignorance.

Fourth state is 'pure consciousness'. IT transcends all three states of consciousness. It is infinite bliss and free from duality.  It is the state of singularity, of advaitic realisation.
